The syllabus below breaks down by weekly modules the 96 hours of instruction by lecture and laboratory and includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification. In addition, there are 16 hours of clinical shadowing in an approved dental office required to successfully complete this course.

Module I: Introduction to Dentistry

Professional/Legal aspects, Anatomy/Physiology, Dental Anatomy, Charting the Dental Examination, Preventive Care, Sealants

Text Chapters: 1-4, 12, 17, 18

Clock Hours: 4 Lectures, 4 Labs

Competencies: Tooth Identification, Topical Fluoride, Personal Oral Hygiene, Flossing Technique

Module II:  Emergencies and Disease Control

Emergencies in the Dental Office, Infection Control, Disease Transmission, Infection Control/ Hazardous Materials, Surface Disinfection, Instrument Processing.

Text Chapters: 5-8, 13

Clock Hours: Lectures 6, Labs 2

Competencies: Applying First Aid After an Exposure, Hand washing, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Placing and Removing Surface Barriers, Treatment Room Cleaning and Disinfection

Module III: Clinical Dentistry

Dental Operatory, Hand Instruments, Instrument Transfer, Rotary Instruments, Moisture Control.

Text Chapters: 9, 10, 19

Clock Hours: Lectures 3, Labs 5

Competencies: Instrument Identification, HVS Placement, Instrument Transfer

Module IV: Impression Materials

Impression Materials and Laboratory Procedures, Prosthodontics.

Text Chapters: 22, 23

Clock Hours: Lectures 3, Labs 5

Competencies: Mixing Alginate Impression Material, Taking Alginate Impression on Classmates, Bite Registration, Pouring Study Models, Mixing Dental Plaster, Two Paste final Impression Material

Module V:  Practicum

Students work in teams of 2 to develop competencies

Prerequisite: Modules I-IV

Clock Hours: Lectures O, Labs 8

Competencies: Seat and Prepare Patients for Treatment, Hand washing, PPE (Personal protective Equipment), Mouth Rinse, Moisture Control, Access and Visibility, Cotton Roll Isolation, Instrument Transfer, Dismiss Patient After Treatment, Place and Remove Surface Barriers, Pre-clean and  Disinfect Treatment Room

Module VI:  Practicum

Students work in teams of 2 to develop competencies

Prerequisite: Modules I-V

Clock Hours: Lectures 0, Labs 8

Competencies: Provisional Restorations, Tray Setups, Dental Handpiece, Bur Placement and Removal, Handpiece Maintenance and Sterilization, Application of Dental Sealants, Delivery and Cementation of a Provisional Restoration, Instrument Identification

Module VII:  Pain and Anxiety Control, Restorative Materials and Restorative Procedures

DDS Demonstration of Amalgam and Composite Placement on a Patient

Text: Chapters 14, 20, 21

Prerequisite: Modules I-VI

Clock Hours: Lectures 3, Labs 5

Competencies: Apply Topical Anesthetic; Prepare Anesthetic Syringe; Preparation, Placement and Removal of Rubber Dam; Assembly, Placement and Removal of Matrix Including Wedge Placement; Mixing procedure for IRM Cement and Polycarboxylate Cement.

Module VIII Radiology

Review Radiology packet with study questions, show videos, give pre-test, demonstrate procedure.

Text: Chapters 15, 16 and Handouts

Clock Hours: Lectures 3, Labs 5

Competencies: Take FM x-ray using XCP instruments.  Students critique then Instructor critique and assign retakes.

Module IX    Radiology

Clock Hours: Lectures 0, Labs 8

Competencies: 1 Full Mouth X-ray with XCP Instruments, 1 Full Mouth X-ray with stabe

RADIOLOGY FINAL WILL BE GIVEN AT 1PM.

Modules X and XI Clinical Competencies

Instructors demonstrate/review areas by student request and demonstrated need. Students work in teams of 2 for skill building and remediation.

Prerequisite: Modules I-IX

Competencies: Patient Preparation, Full Mouth Radiographs on a LIVE PATIENT, Practice HVS on Classmates, Alginate Impressions, Pour Impressions and Fabricate Bleaching Trays, Sealant, Isolation / Moisture Control, Charting, Rubber Dam Placement, Base Application, Matrix Placement with Wedge, Provisional Restoration Fabrication and Cementation, Tray Setup, Instrument Identification, Instrument Transfer, Custom Tray

Module XII  Specialties, Job Search and Resume

Text: Chapters 24-29

Clock Hours: Lectures 6, Labs 2

Specialties: Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Résumé Preparation

Competencies: Submit Resume and Cover Letter
